The method involves transmitting and receiving terminals using a generally equivalent data communications technique in the speech connection paths. The useful information to be transmitted is transported in one or more sections over the data network, whereby the modulation technique specified by the terminal is not directly used over one or more switching nodes or indirectly via a data network, but transmission in the digital data network is performed using a suitable technique. Functional adaptation of the terminals and their matching to the transmission characteristics of the digital data network for transmission of the useful information is unnecessary
