Polymer blends and membranes are prepared by reaction of a polymeric sulfonic acid salt with a primary, secondary or tertiary nitrogen containing polymer. Polymers blends and polymer blend membranes for the production of ion-exchange membranes are prepared by the reaction of a solution of a polymeric sulfonic acid salt of formula (1) with a primary, secondary, or tertiary nitrogen containing polymer in a dipolar aprotic solvent and the resulting sulfonic acid salt-base-blend post treated by storage at 20-100 deg C in hot, dilute mineral acid.
