In the direct synthesis of methylchlorosilanes (I) by reacting methyl chloride with a contact composition (II) containing silicon (Si), copper (Cu) catalyst, zinc (Zn) promoters and tin (Sn) and/or antimony (Sb) promoters, (II) is activated by pretreatment with hydrogen chloride (HCl).
