The apparatus uses segmentation of three-dimensional projected speed pictures, in which the volume of the speed is limited, which are projected on to the picture planes. When the volume of interest contains flowing blood, i.e. an artery or vein, the reflected Doppler shift can be recorded. The transducer array feeds the bunching former (2) with processor (4B) for colour flow. Trigonometric data are held and successive volumetric projections of pixels calculated. The shift is available in the ultrasound reflected from the flow, and then can be used to limit the quantity of speed data, which are projected. Only pixels with speed values within a predetermined area are projected on to the picture plane. The heart cycle may be used as trigger.
