For self-supporting combustion in the catalyst, the energy required is supplied by prior addition of liquid and/or gaseous components for oxidation. The catalyst used is entirely metal, comprising a packing of wires, sheets or cuttings. Their thermal conductivity exceeds 10 W/m.K, and their modulus of elasticity exceeds 50 kN/mm2. Preferred Features: Only a side stream of exhaust gas is taken through a preheater, bringing it to the catalyst light-off temperature. Following this, external energy supply is reduced to zero and all exhaust gases are passed through the catalyst. On reaching light-off temperature, the combustible component addition is increased, with simultaneous reduction of thermal energy supply. The addition of combustible material is accomplished using e.g. propane, butane or similar. Alternatively used oil or solvent residues are supplied.
