An olefin polymer (I) is a 1-butene homopolymer, a copolymer of 1-butene with propylene or a copolymer of 1-butene with an at least 5C alkene. (I) has a number average mol.wt, Mn of at least 200,000 and is an amorphous polymer having essentially no. m.pt. Independent claims are included for: (i) a catalyst (II) for olefin polymerisation prepared by mixing (A) a transition metal compound of formula (1), (B) an organoaluminumoxy compound soluble in an aromatic solvent and (C) water whereby the ratio of aluminum in (B) to transition metal (A) is 1-20,000 and (C) is added at 0.1-3.0 moles per mole of Al in (B); and (ii) a process for the preparation of (I) by homopolymerisation of 1-butene or copolymerisation of 1-butene with propylene or an at least 5 C alkene in the presence of catalyst (II).
