A lithium-, aluminum-, silicon- and oxygen-containing ceramic material is produced by mixing a pre-sintered mixture of a clay and a lithium-containing material with further clay and sintering. A ceramic material, containing lithium, aluminum, silicon and oxygen, is produced by: (a) preparing a first starting mixture of an aluminum- and silicon-containing clay and a lithium-containing material; (b) pre-sintering and optionally grinding the mixture; (c) preparing a second mixture of the pre-sintered material and an aluminum- and silicon-containing clay; and (d) sintering to form the ceramic material. Independent claims are also included for the following: (i) a ceramic material which comprises Li2O, Al2O3, SiOx (x = 1 to 2) and K2O and/or Na2O and which has a thermal expansion coefficient (100-1000 deg C) of -0.030 to +0.030; and (ii) a semifinished material which is suitable for ceramic material production and which comprises the product of step (b) in the above process.
