The invention relates to a method for detecting the filling level of bulk goods containers set up distributed over an area, in particular containers for refuse or valuable materials. In order to be able to detect the filling level of the containers as far as possible without great expenditure of time and money and in order to be able to set up an optimum route plan for the emptying vehicles, it is proposed according to the invention that the instantaneous filling level of the bulk goods container be determined by means of at least one sensor fitted in or on the bulk goods containers, that the filling level data determined by the sensor be interrogated continuously or at specific, preferably uniform, time intervals and, together with a container identification code, be transmitted to a control centre, and that in the control centre the data be evaluated for the purpose of route optimisation of the vehicles driving to and emptying the bulk goods containers.
