A subband filtering method for a stereo audio signal comprises the steps of selecting the filter coefficients necessary in a stereo L- and R-channel filtering so as to be jointly shared and simultaneously filtering stereo L- and R-channel signals using the jointly shared filter coefficients. A filtering apparatus reads out the filter coefficients selected from the memory area by a memory controller and filters the audio signal of the stereo channel by parallel-processing. Thus, coefficient memory space is saved so as to achieve high hardware integration. More particularly, the simplification of a digital-signal-processing integration circuit can be achieved whenever time-division-multiplexing (TDM) processing is not practical or, in the event of TDM-processing, when power consumption becomes excessive.
