A photographic element has: (a) an Ag halide emulsion, with max. sensitivity in the visible region at less than 480 nm., and sensitised with: (b) a blue sensitising dye of formula (I): X1, X2 = S, Se or O; R2, R2 = alkyl, pref. R2 and/or R2 are substd. by an acid or acid salt gp.; Z = an aromatic or heteroaromatic gp. that is directly bonded, or bonded through a sp2 hybridised linking gp., to the benzene ring; or a fused aromatic gp., the benzene rings can be further substd.; and A' = a counter-ion. Also claimed are: (i) a photographic element comprising a silver halide emulsion for at least 90 mol % silver chloride; and (ii) a photographic element comprising a dye of formula (I; R1, R2 = 1 - 8 C alkyl).
