The starter motor contactor (2) is energised (B,6) via a switching transistor (3) operated by the controller (4), which measures the voltage (U) present at the ignition key (6). After the ignition key starter contacts (6) are closed, and before allowing the full contactor current to pass, the controller measures the voltage (U) with the contactor coil open circuit and, using PWM techniques, at two current levels (Ik) below the contactor operating current. These measurements allow it to calculate the battery EMF (Eb) and internal resistance (Rb), and the battery load (Rch) connected at the time. From these, it derives the threshold voltage above which starter operation must be prevented, as the conditions then prevailing occur only when the engine is running and the alternator in service.
