Making nickel titanium alloy wire containing 55.2-56 wt.% nickel, comprises giving a final heating at 480-520 deg C for 5-60 minutes in order to generate platelets of martensite, conferring superelastic properties. Preferably the alloy is formed into an ingot that is repeatedly cold drawn, annealed, recrystallised at 700-800 deg C, for over 2 minutes and optionally hot drawn, producing an extension of 15-28%.
