The passenger information system has a central station communicating with multiple bus stops. The system locates each bus in a unique reference system, and for each bus stop the algebraic distance between the buses and that stop can be determined. The shortest of these distances is then chosen and displayed. The average speed of the bus is estimated from data taken at successive locations, and is used to estimate the arrival time from the calculated distance. The bus stops have receivers to accept the signals carrying the data sent from the central station, and has circuits to drive displays that show the information to the passengers waiting at the stop.
