The cable or light guide consists of a core (2) made from a twisted bundle of up to several dozen polymer optical fibres (1) inside an insulating winding (3) of plastic strip, a metal sleeve (4) of braided supple wires of tinned copper, and an outer covering of self-extinguishing extruded PVC. The diameter of the core is between 3 and 14 mm, and its individual fibres are of PMMA (polymethyl methacrylate) of 0.5, 0.75, 1 or 1.5 mm. The wound insulating covering can be of Therfane (RTM) (sic) or a Therfane-aluminium composition, and instead of tinned copper wires the metal sleeve can be of braided stainless steel wires or rolled aluminium film.
