A medium for the culture and identification of specific yeasts contains a selective inhibitor for the hexosaminidase activity of Candida tropicalis and a chromogenic or fluorogenic substrate that is hydrolyzable by a hexosaminidase enzyme. An Independent claim is also included for a medium having two substrates, one as described above and the other being chromogenic or fluorogenic but hydrolyzable by a glucosidase enzyme, preferably with the marker for the first substrate being different from the marker for the second substrate.
