After subdivision of the data is it subject to two programs which effect contraction of data and extraction of significant parameters. The procedure for the primary processing of a set of data (IM,f) representing physical values includes a first stage of division of the data set (200A - 202). In the course of this stage the data set is divided into first data subassemblies. For each of these first data subassemblies there is a construction stage (205 - 207) during which a first type of global contractive application program is applied. The fixed point of this program forms an approximation for all or part of the subassembly. The application or group of applications used may be multidimensional and nonlinear. A set of parameters (ai, b) is determined by this, and by use of a second subset of data, using a method of successive approximations (407-410) converging towards the fixed point of a second type of global contractive application. The set of parameters determined by this process constitute a primary representation of the first data set.
