A radiation source generates light of wavelength lambda p. This is fed through input mirror Me into a resonant cavity. The cavity contains a cascade of materials possessing nonlinear optical properties, one of which is the tendency to reradiate at wavelength lambda s. The result is that the oscillator converts the majority of the input into radiation which is transmitted through the output mirror Ms at wavelength lambda s.
