A copper inner grid support (13) is positioned next to and outwardly of a cathode (5) and comprises a number of axially directed posts (15) aligned to mounting holes in the grid (9). The grid couples to the inner grid support with the posts engaging respective mounting holes. A stainless steel outer grid support (14) couples to the inner grid support and is positioned axially between the inner grid support and an anode. The grid, which is made from pyrolytic graphite material, is axially centered and positioned between the spaced apart anode and axially centered cathode. In operation the grid receives a high frequency control signal to density modulate an electron beam accelerated by the anode and cathode. The grid has an active central portion and a peripheral portion (8) comprising the evenly spaced, elongated mounting holes. The grid is biased in position by resilient tabs or has an extension or flange brazed to the inner grid support.
