Carding : travelling card flat bars : grinding clothing tips

In a carding machine, the clothing tips of travelling card flat bars 14 are ground during use by contact with grinding roller 17 driven at a different speed to the bars. For improved, more uniform grinding, the peripheral grinding surface of the roller is resilient in a radial direction. The roller comprises (Figure 2, not shown) a solid core surrounded by a resilient foam layer covered by a textile, itself having a resilient component and bearing abrasive. Similar rollers 18,19 are used to dress nip rollers 7, 8. Grinding pressure is provided by gravity. Means are provided to clean rollers 18, 19.
