Method of packaging one or more articles within a container by loading them over a deformable plastics material

An apparatus and method for packaging one or more articles inside a container 1 includes the steps of extending a web 4 of deformable plastics material across the open face, and flap means, of a container. One or more articles are then loaded onto the plastics material to deform it to the general shape of the article within the container, and the plastics material is secured to at least part of the flap means 2. The flap means are then folded and secured to contact the article and close the open face. The open face is preferably the base of the container, and additional cushioning may be provided between the article and the base of the container. Once loaded the container is inverted, so that it has a low centre of gravity, and is stable during transport. The deformable plastic material may be sealed to the container by heat sensitive adhesive, cold adhesive, or any other suitable method. Preferably the plastic material is provided in a roll, or other elongate web, and is held across the open face of the container under tension applied by clamping means 6.
