Extracting magnetically susceptible materials from a fluid using travelling fields

An apparatus for removing magnetically susceptible materials from a fluid comprises a housing (1) fabricated of one or more non-magnetic materials, and having inlet means (2) for introducing the fluid into the housing (1), separating means comprising a plurality of magnets (8,13) placed in proximity to the housing (1) which, in use, are operated sequentially to cause at least some of the magnetically susceptible material to migrate to and along the periphery of the housing (1) to a chosen position 4 of the housing (1). Outlet means (3) discharges fluid from which at least some of the magnetically susceptible material has been separate, and outlet 5 discharges separated material. The housing may comprise a tank, tube (1) or channel, and may be fabricated from non-magnetic stainless steel. The magnets (8,13) may be movable permanent magnets or may be electromagnets activated by the supply of an electric current thereto.
