A process for preparing ,-unsaturated ketones by P Pa) reacting vinylcarbinols or propargyl alcohols with alkyl acetoacetates or diketene andPPb) thermally rearranging the resulting acetoacetates in the presence or absence of an aluminum catalyst to ,-unsaturated ketones (Carroll reaction), PP wherein step a) and/or step b) is carried out in a cyclic carbonate of the formula I or a -lactone of the formula II ##STR1## where R. sup.1, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 are H, or lower alkyl and R. sup.4 is H, lower alkyl, phenyl or methoxymethyl, as solvent.
