PURPOSE:To facilitate the extraction of skull invading into slits and solidified therein, by a method wherein slits, defining a plurality of segments forming the side wall of a crucible furnace, are provided with a drafting angle, widened from the lower part toward the upper parts of the slits gradually. CONSTITUTION:The width W1 of a plurality of segments 3 forming the side wall of a crucible furnace 10 is designed so as to be smaller than the width W2 of the lower end of the same. Accordingly, when respective segments 3 are attached to the outer periphery of a hearth 11 with an equal space, slits 2, formed between respective neighboring segments 3, are provided with tapers so that the space G1 at the upper end becomes wider than the space G2 at the lower end. According to this method, the segments are provided with a drafting angle for extracting skull invaded into the slits 2. Upon manufacturing, a plurality of segments 3 are fixed to the outer periphery of the hearth 11 with bolts 16 while keeping the predetermined space while a plurality of outlet and inlet ports 17 of cooling water are opened on the segments 3.
