PURPOSE:To obtain an adsorbing substance advantagenously recovering a noble metal by using a chitosan derivative wherein one of the hydrogen atoms of the amino group at the C2-position of chitosan is substituted with a hydrocarbon chain having a carboxyl group. CONSTITUTION:One of the hydrogen atoms of the amino group bonded to the C2-position of chitosan is substituted with a hydrocarbon chain having a carboxyl group represented by CnH2nCOOH such as monochloroacetic acid. The chitosan derivative thus obtained is not dissolved in a acid though no crosslinking treatment is applied and is reduced in the inhibiting degree of saturated adsorbing quantity and extremely advantageously recover especially expensive platinum and palladium and also has a high elution rate.
