PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To selectively obtain a, β-hydroxycarbonyl and/or α,β-unsatd. carbonyl compd. at a high conversion rate by using a compd. having a hydrotalcite type structure represented by a specified formula. ;SOLUTION: A compd. having a hydrotalcite type structure represented by formula [M(II)_1-xM(III)_x(OH)_2-x]_mH₂O is used in the preparation of a β- hydroxycarbonyl and/or α,β-unsatd. carbonyl compd. In the formula, M(II) is a divalent cation selected from a group comprising Ni, Zn, Co, Mg and a mixture of at least two of these metals, M(III) is a trivalent cation such as Al, Ga, Fe or Cr, (x) is 0.20-0.33 and m≤1.
