PURPOSE: To produce high carbon steel wire rod or a steel wire excellent in wire drawability and to provide a producing method therefor. ;CONSTITUTION: This is a high carbon steel wire rod or steel wire having a compsn. contg., by weight, 0.90 to 1.10% C, ≤0.40% Si and ≤0.50% Mn, in which the content of P is limited to ≤0.02$, S to ≤0.01$ and Al to ≤0.003%, and the balance Fe with inevitable impurities, having a microstructure in which the area ratio of the upper bainitic structure obtd. by two-stage transformation is regulated to ≥80% and Hv is regulated to ≤450 and excellent in wire drawability, and a method for producing the same is provided.
