PURPOSE:To allow a device to hardly generate judder or shock just before engagement, and thereby make it possible to be quickly synchronized by making up the device of the assemblage of friction plates composed of elastic members each of which compresses each projection in such a way as to come in/out, and of mating plates which are formed with recessed places each of which accepts the aforesaid projection. CONSTITUTION:This frictional engaging device 10 is provided with paired first plates 21 which are formed with plural window sections 24 in the circumferential direction while friction members 26 are fixedly bonded onto one side surface of each plate, and is provided with a second plate furnished with projections 30 which are interspaced with each first plate 21 while being fitted in each window section 24 in such a way as to come in/out. And the device is made up of the assemblies 12 of friction plates composed of elastic members 23 which compress each projection 30 so as not to be projected out of each surface of the friction members 26 into a space between one of the paired first plates 21 and a second plate 22 when hydraulic pressure is built up at the time of the first step, but compress each projection 30 so as to be projected out of the surface when hydraulic pressure is built up at the time of the second step, and is also made up of paired mating plates 14 located at both outsides of each friction member 26 in the axial direction wherein plural recessed places 16 which accept the projections 30, are formed in the circumferential direction.
