PURPOSE: To cast a casting having high mechanical strength by incorporating specific amounts of Si, Cu, Mg, and Al. ;CONSTITUTION: This Al alloy has a composition which consists of, by weight, 10-12% Si, 3.7-4% Cu, 0.4-0.5% Mg, and the balance essentially Al and in which the total content of Cu and Mg is regulated to 4.1-4.4. Differential carrier and housing are die casted by using this Al alloy. Si has a function of improving shrinkage characteristic as well as the flowability of molten metal. Cu improves tensile strength and proof stress as well as seizure characteristic. Mg has a function of improving tensile strength and proof stress. Tensile strength and proof stress are deteriorated when the total content of Cu and Mg is lower than 4.1%, and, when it exceeds 4.4%, elongation is deteriorated. Because of high mechanical strength, the necessity of heat treatment, after casting, for differential carrier and housing can be obviated.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1995,JPO
