PURPOSE:To obtain a high purity Nb deriv., etc., by chlorinating Nb alloy scraps, etc., purifying NbCl5 by distillation, reducing the purified NbCl5 with hydrogen, removing Ta, rechlorinating the resulting high purity Nb3Cl8 and allowing the product to react with alcohol. CONSTITUTION:Nb-Ti alloy scraps or ferroniobium is allowed to directly react with Cl2 at =250 deg.C to continuously obtain anhydrous chlorides and NbCl5 is separated from lower b.p. and higher b.p. chlorides by utilizing the differences in b.p. The purified NbCl5 is reduced with hydrogen, Ta is removed and Mb3Cl8 is recovered and rechlorinated at a low temp. to obtain high purity MbCl5. This NbCl5 is allowed to react with alcohol to obtain high purity Nb alkoxide. This Nb alkoxide is hydrolyzed in the presence of carbon to obtain high purity Nb oxide.
