PURPOSE:To realize the signal equalizer having a frequency characteristic approximated to a desired frequency characteristic by applying data to plural serially connected peaking filters, which can control levels, by matrix operation. CONSTITUTION:In respect to plural serially connected peaking filters 11-1N enabling level control, a matrix constituting means 6 constitutes a matrix with the number, which is coincident to the number of the peaking filters 11-1N, of rows and columns having the response information of the respective peaking filters, and the inverse matrix of this matrix is operated by an inverse matrix constituting means 8. Then, a one-dimensional matrix obtained by a desired frequency detecting means 10 and the inverse matrix are multiplied by a matrix operating means 9, and the result is applied as the levels of the respective peaking filters.
