PURPOSE: To effectively improve wet strength of cellulosic paper by adding an amine-functional poly(vinyl alcohol) and an ester (anhydride) having an alkyl or alkenyl substituent of the specified carbon atom number to the paper. ;CONSTITUTION: Vinyl acetate, N-vinylformamide and deionized water are introduced in a reactor, to which t-butylperoxy neodecanoate is added. They are polymerized by heating in nitrogen stream at 60°C. Thereafter, the reaction mixture is filtered and the obtained wet cake of copolymer is suspended in methanol, to which HCl is added and heated under reflux for 1 hour, then dried in vacuum, to obtain an amine-functional poly(vinyl alcohol). It is added in together with a 4- or 5-membered cyclic ester or its anhydride (such as dodecenylsuccinic anhydride) to paper during paper-making, to improve the wet strength of cellulosic paper effectively.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1994,JPO
