PURPOSE: To obtain the method for identifying the contents in a waste drum, which can discriminate the kinds of the radioactive wastes in the drum without destruction. ;CONSTITUTION: The high-speed neutrons generated in a pulse-shaped-neutron generating source 1 are cast on a waste drum 3, which is a body under inspection, by an active neutron method. The speed is decreased with a neutron moderator (e.g. graphite), which constitutes the wall of an analysis container 2 housing the waste drum 3, neutron moderator in the waste drum and the like. The neutron flux, whose speed is decreased, is measured with thermal-neutron detectors 4, which are arranged at the various distances in the inside from the surface of the wall of the analysis container. The weight of the waste is measured with a scale 6. The identification of the contents in the waste drum is performed by the judgment (identification) based on the comparison with the measured values by using the table, which represents the ratio between the counting rate of the thermal neutrons in the wall of the analysis container for the kinds and the weights of the wastes that are obtained beforehand under the same high-speed neutron irradiation condition and the counting rate of the thermal neutrons between the detectors.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1993,JPO&Japio
