PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce an intermetallic compound reinforced magnesium base composite material, into a matrix composed of magnesium (alloy), by compositely dispersing intermetallic compounds synthesized by in situ reaction as the main reinforcements. ;SOLUTION: A powdery mixture or a preform of titanium dioxide and alumina is infiltrated with a matrix metal, and oxidizing-reducing reaction and in situ reaction accompanying the generation of heat to arise to synthesize titanium-aluminum intermetallic compounds, which are compositely dispersed into the matrix. In this place, as the impregnation, no pressure impregnation is adopted, the powdery mixture or preform and the ingot of the matrix metal are brought into contact, and they are held under heating to the m.p. of the matrix metal or above in an inert atmosphere.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1998,JPO
