PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a motor controller for direct-current electric rolling stocks which does not require a waiting time before start of braking and permits accurate braking control even if a forward/backward travel switch is in the neutral position or the electric rolling stock is coasting with the accelerator off. SOLUTION: The motor controller for direct-current electric rolling stocks is provided with the motor revolutions detector 15 of a direct-current motor 7 and a judgment control unit 3 which, when a speed detected based on motor revolutions exceeds a preset speed during power running control, judges a traveling direction indicated by a traveling direction operating means 2 as the traveling direction of the vehicles, stores the traveling direction, maintains the stored traveling direction until the speed falls below the preset speed, and performs regenerative braking or plugging braking on the direct-current motor based on the result of comparison of the stored traveling direction and the traveling direction after switching of the traveling direction operating means. The control unit controls regenerative braking or plugging braking when the stored traveling direction and the traveling direction after switching of the traveling direction operating means are opposite to each other, and controls power running when the stored traveling direction and the traveling direction after switching of the traveling direction operating means agree with each other. In addition, when an acceleration command from the accelerator 1 exceeds a value at the time of off by a specified value, the control unit exercises regenerative braking, plugging braking and power running control based on similar judgment.
