PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a novel β-amylase gene which consists of a mutant β-amylase gene isolated and purified from barley having β-amylase activity defective characteristics and is useful for discriminating a β-amylase activity defective barley breed and breeding it. ;SOLUTION: This β-amylase gene is an isolated and purified novel mutant β-amylase gene originating from barley, which shows β-amylase activity defective characteristics, possesses mutation in β-amylase structural gene or in the adjacent domain and is specified by the restriction enzyme map shown by the formula, discriminates a barley breed having β-amylase activity defective characteristics simply and is useful in the method or the like of breeding with shortening the breeding term of the barley breed having β-amylase activity defective characteristics. This mutant β-amylase gene is obtained by isolating and purifying it from barley having β-amylase activity defective characteristics by a conventional method and selecting a gene in which Dra I fragment of 9.3 kb containing a part of β-amylase structural gene in the mutation is formed.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2000,JPO
