PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the operability of a foot pedal by providing a first switch providing a first operation signal by treading a footrest and a second switch arranged on the lateral side of the footrest and providing a second operation signal by moving parallelly on the operating surface. ;SOLUTION: In the surgery of cataract, the eyes of a patient are irrigated with an irrigation solution through a surgical handpiece that emulsifies and sucks the lens nucleus obscured and hardened due to the cataract by ultrasound vibration. On this occasion, operations including irrigation, suction and ultrasound emulsification are controlled through a control section following an operation signal responding to the amount of depression of a main pedal 14a of a foot switch. An operation signal from a side pedal 14b rotates reversely a suction pump for a fixed period. This side pedal 14b, when an operator pushes laterally a side plate 31 by his foot, turns on a microswitch 35 by moving horizontally a connection 32 in the lateral direction through a parallel linking mechanism 33a.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2000,JPO
