PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a friction agitating joining method and a joined structure, by which thick materials to be joined can be easily and securely joined and joining can be surely carried out from one side in a joining end. ;SOLUTION: In a friction agitating joining method for obtaining a joined structure 8, step parts 2, 2 are formed along a joined end of thick aluminum materials (materials to be joined) 1, 1, and plural end faces 3, 4 formed by the step parts 2 are adjacent to each other. Under this condition, friction agitation joining is applied between the end faces on the outer side by a tool 10 so as to produce a joining line W1. Further, an aluminum connecting plate 6 is inserted in a groove 5 formed on at least one side of the end face 3 and between inner end faces 4, 4 of the step parts 2, 2, and friction agitating joining is applied along the line between the connecting plate 6 and each of the inner end faces 4 of the aluminum materials 1 for forming joined lines W2, W2.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1999,JPO
