SCANNER AND METHOD FOR SELECTING SCANNER RESOLUTION

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a scanner capable of automatically selecting a resolution according to the type of original to be read. SOLUTION: This scanner is provided with an original reading sensor 201 capable of reading in two resolutions, an A/D converter 202 which converts read information into digital data, a quantizer 204 quantizing the digital data, a buffer 205 temporarily storing the quantized data and a compressing means, which compresses data stored in the buffer and has a mode deciding part 210 that analyzes the distribution of the data stored in the buffer 205, when a part of an original is read, decides whether or not the original is a text and selects a resolution level, a resolution controlling part 211 which controls the sensor 201 and an original feeding mechanism 212 according to the selected resolution and a resolution converting part 213, which converts the resolution of the data stored in the buffer 205.
