PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To simply obtain the subject compound in a high volume efficiency by one pot in a short time by N-acylating a triphenyldihydroimidazole and, without isolation, hydrolyzing the reaction product with a mineral acid. ;SOLUTION: An imidazole of formula I is reacted, for example, with an acid anhydride of formula II (R is a 1-10C alkyl which may be substituted with a halogen or the like) to give a (±)-2,4r,5t-triphenyl-4,5-dihydro-1- acylimidazole of formula III (R" is a 1-10C alkyl which may be substituted with a halogen or the like), which is reacted with water to give a (±)-1- acylamino-2-benzamido-1,2-diphenylethane of formula IV. The compound is hydrolyzed in the presence of a mineral acid to give a mixture of compounds of formula V and formula VI (Y- is a chloride ion, a bromide ion or the like) and further hydrolyzed in the presence of the mineral acid to give a (±)-1,2- diphenyl-1,2-ethanediamine salt of formula VII.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2000,JPO
