PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an oxidation method of the waste gas, particularly waste gas containing soot, using a system generating a gas phase hydroxyl radical from moisture and oxygen on the surface of a catalyst. ;SOLUTION: The waste gas is treated with a nascent hydroxyl radical by bringing the waste gas in which moisture and oxygen coexist into contact with the catalyst selected from the group consisting of an alkaline earth metal oxide based catalyst, a lanthanoide oxide based catalyst and the catalyst obtained by doping an alkali metal to these catalysts and their mixed catalyst at 600-1,200°C to form the gas phase hydroxyl radical from the moisture and the oxygen at the surface of the catalyst and oxidizing the matter to be removed and to be oxidized in the waste gas with the gas phase hydroxyl radical.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2000,JPO
