PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a compacted body high in a packing ratio and also high in the utilizing efficiency of absorbing and releasing hydrogen in the production of the compacted body of hydrogen storage alloy powder in which hydrogen storage alloy powder is packed, and the obtd. packed body is compressed and compacted. SOLUTION: Spherical hydrogen storage alloy powder is used, and the hydrogen storage alloy powder before being subjected to compression (e.g. the powder in a state in which the paste of the alloy powder is applied on a carrier or the one before its conversion into paste) is subjected to a treating cycle consisting of the absorption and release of hydrogen for at least one time in such a manner that the ratio of the average grain size of the hydrogen storage alloy powder before the treatment to the average grain size after the treatment reaches =0.9.
