PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a quantum well optical modulator which is increased in a foundation absorption end shift by widening a quantum well width without lowering extinction intensity and is capable of making low-voltage operation and a module for optical communication and optical communication system using the same. ;SOLUTION: A quantum well structure is formed by using a material (group III-V compd.) having a large dielectric constant for quantum well layers 11 and using a material (group II-VI compd.) having a small dielectric constant, such as ZeSe, for barrier layers 12. The ratio of the dielectric constants of the quantum well layers 11 and the barrier layers 12 is made larger than 1.5 to intensify the Coulomb interaction of the electrons and holes in the quantum well and to intensify the coupling energy of excitons and vibrator intensity. The operating voltage is lowered by making the quantum well width when the coupling energy of the excitons is maintained constant is maintained constant larger than that of the conventional materials.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2000,JPO
