PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To estimate stress state in the ground by measuring propagation velocity of shearing wave utilizing the stress dependence thereof. ;SOLUTION: Horizontal propagation velocities (VS)VH, (VS)HH of SV and SH waves are measured by cross hole measurement and a stationary earth pressure coefficient (K0=σH/σV) being defined as the ration of horizontal and vertical stresses σH and σV is determined according to following expression in order to estimate stress state in the ground. K0=[{(VS)H/(VS)VH}(CVH/CHH)]1/m where, CVH, CHH are a function of the gap ratio, stress record, and framework structure, and m, n are constants.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1999,JPO
