PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new deuterium-labeled styrene dimer having a specific structure, useful for the quantitative analysis of a remaining quantity of styrene oligomers. ;SOLUTION: This new dimer is expressed by the formula (wherein R1 is phenyl or the like; R2 is H or deuterium atom; C6D5 is substituted phenyl where deuterium atoms are substituted for all hydrogen atoms on the phenyl ring) and is e.g. 1,3-diphenyl-2-propen-1-one-2',3',4',5',6'-d5. The compound of the formula is obtained by the following steps: (1) reacting 1 mol aldehyde with 1-10 mol acetophenone-d5 under a basic condition using a base (e.g. sodium hydroxide or the like) in a solvent (e.g. methanol or the like) at a temperature from 0°C to the solvent refluxing temperature for 10 min to 24 h.; (2) catalytic hydrogenation reaction of the reaction product in the presence of a catalyst (e.g. palladium-activated carbon or the like) at room temperature for 10 min to 10 h.; (3) and reacting 1 mol resultant product with 1-10 mol Wittig reagent at a temperature from 0°C to the solvent refluxing temperature for 10 min to 10 h.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2000,JPO
