PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for diagnosing the deterioration of a coated cable, a method for extending the life thereof and a method for estimating the remaining life thereof, on and after the diagnosis on deterioration. ;SOLUTION: A plurality of deterioration factor-measuring means are arranged along the laying longitudinal direction of a coated cable to comprehend the deterioration state of the coated cable to diagnose the deterioration of a part high in deterioration factor strength and the environment of this area is improved to an environment which is hard to deteriorate the coated cable to extend the life of the coated cable. In a remaining life estimating method, a plurality of Arrhenius curves using deterioration diagnosing characteristics related to an org. polymeric material forming a coating layer as parameters are utilized to estimate the time necessary to reach a predetermined life value with respect to the predetermined operation temp. of the coated cable, on and after the diagnosis of deterioration. The deterioration degree of the coated cable can be known objectively and accurately and the life of the coated cable is extended by the improvement of laying environment. The coated cable can be removed before it reaches estimate life and accident of insulating destruction or fire accident of the coated cable can be prevented in advance.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1999,JPO
