PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image input technology by which an image with high contrast is photographed even when a dynamic range of an image pickup element is narrow. ;SOLUTION: Since an optical image is formed on an image pickup element 4 through a transmission filter 3 whose optical transmission factor is selectively variable a dynamic range of the image pickup element is fully utilized by decreasing the transmission factor of the transmission filter 3 partially for only a component of an image with high luminance thereby decreasing a contrast difference from a component with low luminance. On the other hand, the image component with high luminance is reproduced with fidelity by increasing the image signal depending on the transmission actor in the case of reproducing the image thereby enhancing the image quality.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2000,JPO
