PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a novel compound that is obtained from the culture mixture of a microorganism in Exserohilum spp., has herbicidal, plant growth- regulating and antimicrobial actions and is useful as an active ingredient for herbicides, plant growth regulators and microbicides. ;SOLUTION: This is a compound represented by formula I [X is -CO-, -C(OH)H-; Y is -C(CH3)=, -C(CH3)H-; Z is =CH-, when Y is -C(CH3)=, or -CH2-; R is a group of formula II or formula III], typically the compound of formula IV. The compound of formula IV has the following physical and chemical properties: appearance, yellowing crystals; molecular formula, C15H10O5; molecular weight: 270 or the like. The compound of formula I is obtained by culturing a filamentous fungus in Exserohilum spp. in a medium containing a water-soluble carbohydrate and isolating and purifying the objecting compound from the culture mixture through solvent extraction, adsorption, desorption and the like.
