PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a novel compound that is obtained from the culture mixture of a microorganism in Exserohilum spp., has herbicidal, plant growth- regulating and antimicrobial actions and is useful as an active ingredient for herbicides, plant growth regulators and microbicides. ;SOLUTION: This is a compound represented by formula I [R1 and R2 bond to each other to represent the group of formula II or R1 represents the group of formula III and R2 is formyl], typically the compound of formula IV. The compound of formula IV has the following physical and chemical properties: appearance, yellow oil; molecular formula, C16H14O6; molecular weight: 302 or the like. The compound of formula I is obtained by culturing a filamentous fungus in Exserohilum spp. in a medium containing a water-soluble carbohydrate and isolating and purifying the objecting compound from the culture mixture through solvent extraction adsorption, desorption and the like. A plant growth regulators and the like are prepared by using, as an active ingredient, the compound of formula I, its salt, its hydrate and its solvate.
