A tar-containing gas cooled and freed of dust in the dust-collecting and cooling apparatus is introduced into a tar recovery apparatus, which consists of cooling apparatuses 12-14 installed in series along the gas channel, decanters 16-18 which separate tar from cooling water and are connected to the cooling apparatuses 12-14, respectively, and recovery tanks 24-26 receiving tar recovered at the decanters 16-18, respectively. Therefore, the tar produced is separated at the recovery step into several fractions according to their b.p. levels, and purification processes suitable for their properties can be selected.
