PURPOSE:To obtain the ceramic material having improved thermal shock resistance, high-temperature characteristics, breaking toughness and breaking strength by dispersing a specific amount of nano-particles having a dimension of nanometer order as a 2nd phase in a ZrO2 crystal grain. CONSTITUTION:ZrO2 powder having an average particle diameter of about 0. 3mum is mixed with a non-oxide powder such as SiC and/or an oxide powder such as Al2O3 having an average particle diameter of =400nm. The mixture is formed and sintered at =1200 deg.C to obtain the particle-dispersed ZrO2 ceramic material containing 0.1-30vol.% of nano-particles having a dimension of nano- meter order (an average particle diameter of =400nm) and consisting of non- oxide particles and/or oxide particles as a 2nd phase dispersed in the ZrO2 crystal grain.
